The class spent the afternoon learning about what life in an East Coast community is (and was) like. Below are some things that people do in Meteghan, NS.
Please remember to return your signed blue form for the field trip as soon as possible. The first group is heading to the Bow Habitat Station in one week and the second group will go in two weeks. Spring Scholastic went home on Friday. This time, I swear my name should be searchable through the online payment system. I will put the orders in on Monday March 5. Remember that you are able to redeem your coupon for a book up to 6 dollars - just bring your coupon back to school with your book choice filled in. Enjoy your evening :)

The day ended with Phys Ed but before that, the class was busy exploring life in an East Coast town - Meteghan, Nova Scotia! So far, we have learned about whales, schools, and the Bay of Fundy. In the morning, the class worked on fact families and figuring out the 4 associated number sentences. For example, 6 + 12 = 18, 12 + 6 = 18, 18 - 6 = 12, 18 - 12 = 6.
Field trip forms are going home tonight. Half of the class will be going on March 5th and the other half will go on March 12. There is an extra letter that went home which will have more information and tell you who is going on what day. Blue forms are due back asap. We can only take one parent volunteer each day so, if your parent has a security clearance and wants to come, ask them to let me know right away. We may have to just put names in a hat and draw from them. The cost is 12.00. Have a great evening and enjoy the fresh air! Today was the official hundred and first day of instruction!
On this hundred and first day, the class finished writing about "When I am 100...". There were some very funny ideas out there and it was great fun to read. We continued to work on addition with numbers up to 100 using different strategies and tools. Strategies that we have worked on are:
Why do people want to host the olympics?
Daily Recap: Today the class decorated bags for collecting Valentine's Day cards tomorrow. All of the first names of students in this class are posted on yesterday's blog post. We also went to the gym to listen to a drum performance. Each group told a drum story with drums and buckets. This morning, the grade twos worked on their writing and typing in Google Drive. All of them managed to share their work with the teacher online. Today was also way too nice out to not head outside and make some snow people. Check out the photo montage of the class hard at work :) Important Dates:

We had a special visit from our school's constable. She talked about all her tools that she uses everyday and some of her tools she use only occasionally. One of her most important tools is her pen. This surprised us. She also talked to us about the zones of regulation and how it's important to be in the calm and happy zone to make good decisions. We read a book together and created our own Emotional Scale. Here is a great link to check out what team Canada is doing at the olympics: http://www.cbc.ca/cbckidsolympics/ This morning, our class worked really hard in pairs and interviewed one another to check for comprehension of the chapter book that we are reading in class called "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." We brainstormed some good questions to ask your partner and then recorded the interviews in Photobooth.
This connects with the Language Arts curriculum of being able to Record key facts and ideas in own words and Ask good questions to focus on particular aspects of the story for own understanding. Our class had lots of fun building forts, towers, snow angels, and slides. The lesson we learned today was respecting other people's forts and slides by not breaking them. What is the right thing to do if you see someone else's snow fort or slide? Ask if you can help or leave it alone if there is no one around. - Kahlan Check out some of the photos below: Important Dates:
